Know how it will sit on your bed.
A flat sheet is sized for the fabric. A mattress is sized for the bed. The difference is what tucks in.

Spare fabric per side, in inches, before your mattress depth is taken up. A 6–8 inch mattress uses that much of it; the rest tucks under. Measure your mattress top and depth before choosing.
